What to serve with Salted Caramel Dumplings

Salted caramel dumplings are rich and decadent on their own, but you can enhance the overall experience by serving them with a variety of complementary accompaniments. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Vanilla Ice Cream: A classic pairing, serving salted caramel dumplings with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream adds a cool and contrasting element to the warm dumplings. The combination of hot and cold, sweet and salty, creates a delightful contrast.
  2. Whipped Cream: Another option is to serve the dumplings with a dollop of freshly whipped cream. The light and airy texture of the cream provides a nice balance to the denser dumplings and caramel sauce.
  3. Fresh Fruits: Add a touch of freshness by serving sliced fruits alongside the salted caramel dumplings. Fruits like sliced strawberries, bananas, or raspberries can add a burst of acidity and juiciness that cuts through the richness of the dessert.
  4. Chopped Nuts: For added texture and nutty flavor, sprinkle some chopped nuts such as toasted almonds, pecans, or walnuts over the dumplings. The crunchiness of the nuts provides a pleasant contrast to the soft dumplings.
  5. Sea Salt Flakes: As a finishing touch, sprinkle a few flakes of sea salt over the dumplings and the accompanying components. The saltiness enhances the overall flavour profile and complements the caramel.

Remember, these are just suggestions, and you can experiment with different toppings or accompaniments based on your preferences. Enjoy your salted caramel dumplings with your chosen accompaniments!

Storing leftovers

CARAMEL SAUCE

  1. Let it cool: Allow the caramel sauce to cool completely at room temperature before storing it. This will prevent condensation from forming inside the storage container.
  2. Choose an airtight container: Transfer the cooled caramel sauce to a clean, airtight container. A glass jar or a plastic container with a tight-fitting lid works well. Make sure the container is clean and dry to maintain the sauce’s freshness.
  3. Refrigerate for short-term storage: For shorter storage periods, such as up to a week, refrigerate the caramel sauce. The cold temperature will help to preserve its quality and prevent spoilage. Before using refrigerated caramel sauce, let it come to room temperature or warm it gently to soften it.
  4. Freeze for longer storage: If you want to store the caramel sauce for a more extended period, freezing is an excellent option. Pour the cooled sauce into a freezer-safe container or divide it into smaller portions for convenience. Leave some headspace in the container as the sauce may expand when frozen. Seal the container tightly and label it with the date.
  5. Thawing and reheating: When you’re ready to use the frozen caramel sauce, transfer it to the fridge and allow it to thaw overnight. Once thawed, you may notice some separation or a change in texture. Give it a good stir to bring it back to a smooth consistency. If desired, you can gently warm the sauce in a microwave or on the stovetop, stirring occasionally until it reaches the desired temperature.
  6. Check for freshness: Before using stored caramel sauce, always check its appearance, smell, and taste. If it looks or smells off or has an unusual texture, it’s best to discard it to ensure food safety.

Remember, homemade caramel sauce may thicken or crystallize slightly during storage, but stirring or gently heating can help restore its smooth texture.

DUMPLINGS

  1. Cool the dumplings: Allow the cooked dumplings to cool down to room temperature before storing them. This helps prevent moisture buildup and ensures they don’t become soggy during storage.
  2. Choose a storage container: Select a suitable container that is airtight and food-safe. Plastic containers with tight-fitting lids or resealable plastic bags work well for storing dumplings. Ensure the container is clean and dry before use.
  3. Separate the dumplings: If the dumplings are stuck together, it’s best to separate them before storing. This prevents them from sticking together and makes it easier to reheat individual portions later.
  4. Arrange in a single layer: Place the dumplings in a single layer in the container or bag. If you need to stack multiple layers, place a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper between the layers to prevent sticking.
  5. Seal the container: Ensure the container or bag is sealed tightly to prevent air and moisture from entering. This helps maintain the quality and flavour of the dumplings.
  6. Refrigerate or freeze: Depending on how long you intend to store the dumplings, you can choose to refrigerate or freeze them:
    • Refrigeration: If you plan to consume the dumplings within a few days, store them in the refrigerator. They can typically stay fresh for up to 3-4 days when properly refrigerated.
    • Freezing: For longer storage, freezing is a better option. Place the sealed container or bag of dumplings in the freezer. Properly stored, dumplings can last for several months in the freezer.
  7. Thaw and reheat: When you’re ready to enjoy the stored dumplings, follow these steps:
    • Refrigerated dumplings: If the dumplings were refrigerated, simply reheat them by steaming, in the Varoma® for about 5 mins or until heated through. You can also re heat in the microwave.
    • Frozen dumplings: Thaw the frozen dumplings in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, you can steam in the Varoma® or microwave to reheat. If reheating from frozen, increase the cooking time accordingly.
