Lavash Crackers

Lavash Crackers

My Lavash crackers are thin, unleavened flatbreads with a crisp texture. Originating from the Middle East, they are made with basic pantry ingredients: flour, water, salt, and oil. These super easy crackers are commonly used for dipping, topping, or serving alongside various dishes, adding a simple and satisfying crunch to snacks and meals.

In my house a grazing or cheese board will never be without them! Expensive to buy, super cheap to make and a perfect gift!

Flavour

You really can add any spices or herbs to the Lavash before baking. Think cumin, paprika and garlic powder for a nice spiced version. Sprinkle on seeds or finely grated parmesan. Sea salt and rosemary are another lovely combination as is honey and walnuts.

Make a batch and make up a number of toppings to find your favourite. I love my ‘Sprinkles’.

Serving Ideas

Lavash crackers are incredibly versatile and can be served in various ways. Here are some serving ideas:

Dipping:

  • Serve lavash with classic dips like hummus, tzatziki, or baba ganoush.
  • Pair with salsa, guacamole, or spinach-artichoke dip for a tasty twist.

Cheese and Charcuterie Board:

  • Arrange lavash on a cheese and charcuterie board.
  • Pair with a variety of cheeses, cured meats, olives, and pickles.

Open-Faced Sandwiches:

  • Use lavash as a base for open-faced sandwiches.
  • Top with smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers or with turkey, cheese, and cranberry sauce.

Mediterranean Flavors:

  • Create a Mediterranean-inspired snack with lavosh, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, and kalamata olives.

Crunchy Canapés:

  • Cut lavash into small squares and use them as a base for canapés.
  • Top with herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon, or cucumber slices.

Salads and Soups:

  • Break lavash into pieces and use them as croutons for salads or soups.
  • Add a crunchy element to your favourite greens or a bowl of tomato soup.

Flavoured Butter or Spreads:

  • Serve lavash with flavoured butter or specialty spreads.
  • Consider options like truffle butter, honey butter, or fruit preserves.

Sweet Treats:

  • Turn lavash into a sweet snack by spreading Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread.
  • Top with sliced strawberries or bananas for a dessert-like treat.

Hors d’oeuvres:

  • Create bite-sized hors d’oeuvres with lavash, cream cheese, and a dollop of pesto or sun-dried tomato spread.

Remember to consider the occasion and the flavours you enjoy when serving lavosh. Its versatility makes it a fantastic addition to a wide range of culinary creations.

Storing

To maintain the freshness and crispness of lavash, it’s important to store it properly.

  1. Airtight Container:
    • Place lavash in an airtight container to protect it from exposure to air. This helps prevent the crackers from becoming stale or losing their crisp texture.
  2. Cool and Dry Environment:
    • Store the airtight container in a cool, dry place. Exposure to humidity can cause the lavash to absorb moisture and become less crisp.
  3. Avoid Direct Sunlight:
    • Keep lavash away from direct sunlight, as prolonged exposure to sunlight can affect its texture and flavour.
  4. Separate Layers:
    • If you are stacking multiple pieces of lavash, consider placing a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper between the layers to prevent them from sticking together.
  5. Freezing
    • Lavash can be frozen for longer-term storage. Place the lavash in a freezer bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing. Thaw at room temperature when ready to use.
  6. Re-Crisping (If Needed):
    • If your lavash loses some of its crispness, you can re-crisp it by briefly placing it in a preheated oven (170°C) for a few minutes. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
